WdW Giveaway and My Take on Why

Quite awhile back I mentioned that I had started exchanging handmade items on a fun site called whoopdwhoop. Well it was really fun and exciting! It's nice when the things I make are enjoyed by others and when, in return, I can pick out handmade things for myself and the boys that I just wouldn't buy otherwise. I love packaging up what I send- it really is super fun. :)

For awhile, I actually only participated very little, but have recently started doing more again. One neat thing about swapping handmade items is that you're not just focused on your own stuff and your own success. The real thrill is seeing what new things have been listed for grabs and what other crafters are doing! It's also nice to have the option to be involved to the degree you can manage, rather than the pressure of having to do more than you really want to.

Anyhow, one of my fellow crafters on whoopdwhoop is having a
Challenge/ Giveaway at her cute little blog, Sweetly Made Just for You,
to help whoopdwhoop grow even more!

and I will throw in a set of my matchbook notepads and a Little Cinch Backpack!

If you have any inkling to try it out, you can get some
cool, handmade prizes on top of the fun of participating!
Give whoopdwhoop a look-
no doubt you have talents that could make it fun for you too!

Stephen and the Spectacular, Impressive... Unfortunate Day

or flight, rather...
Every year in mid-February we trek down to the Lehi area of Utah for the Utah Sky Trials.

See, my husband has this addiction...
called Falconry.
He could survive and figure out ways to try and be happy without a heck of a lot of things.
But, these nutty birds of prey are not one of them.
He requires them to be really, truly fulfilled.
See... addiction!

Usually I just let him drive down the road on Thursday and Friday, sometimes Saturday, afternoons on his own, Zues (bird) and Rocky (dog) in tow. But Utah Sky Trials are different somehow.

I go along to watch the boys dig in the dirt, feel small in this beautiful valley, conjure up potato chowder or some other soup over the propane stove on the tailgate, and be pretty darn proud of my hubby as he hobnobs with people who have this same crazy addiction.

So Friday is the day that 20 flights get narrowed down to 10, based on things like how close the falcon stays to the falconer, how high it goes, what kind of stoop it turns in to try and catch the pigeon they release, how well it responds to the lure when it needs to come down.

Stephen flew Zues when the sky was clear blue and we had all taken off the heavy coats in favor of hoodies.
And the flight was spectacular, impressive! He climbed higher than any bird had so far. He stooped long across the sky, hit the pigeon three times and turned on it six times!

And when the pigeon was eventually gone, having bailed into the tent they set up in the middle of the desert for who knows what reason, well, Zues started climbing again. And enjoying the warm thermals. And not paying attention to Stephen's anxious lure tricks. The judge covertly tells Stephen, "You need to get him back, because right now, you have the highest score." Thanks, thanks for that.

I should mention here that falconers can't use live bait to get their birds out of the sky. Bummer for a game falconer like Stephen (who actually does hunt with Zues, rather than just toss pigeons for him).

Anyway, alas, Zues was waiting for the next target and Stephen had to drive out to toss him a live pigeon to ensure that he would get him back. Disqualified. But, wow, the best flight of the day and the best feeling we all had for him!

Really, I just go so I can hang out with Ryder in the truck and eat Vanilla Wafers :)

Stephen did get to do an exhibition flight on Saturday after all... No cash prize at the end, but, yet again, one of the best flights of the day. He really might just have won.

Stephen was really pleased about how things went no matter what. He still has Zues and that's what mattered in the end. Because now he can load up on Thursday and find some sage grouse- his real prize :)
Or medicine, whatever you want to call it...

Save the Date: Idaho Matters!

I recently wrote an article regarding the Idaho Republican Party Caucus elections
and learned a lot of details that I feel are important to share as widely as possible.

I know I don't normally, really ever,
get in to anything political here on the blog,
but I think this matters so here it is.
I've edited the article a titch and am including it here in this post below...
Obviously this applies specifically to Idahoans, but maybe it'll help anyone from elsewhere too :)

If you don't want to read the whole thing, the takeaway is this:
  • If you want to have a voice regarding who will be up against Obama in November, you need to CLICK HERE to find your county's Caucus election information and go vote on Tuesday, March 6!
  • The May Primary Election we are used to here in Idaho will not include selection of presidential candidates.
  • It goes without saying that you need to be a registered Republican to participate. (I don't know that Stephen and I are!) So, if that's the case with you also, you can get the voter registration card HERE- printing and filling it out to take with you (along with photo ID) on March 6th will save some time!
  • There are lots of other important and interesting details, so if our next President is anything you care about -and you know you do, at least to some degree- then, read on!

Thanks for stickin' with me while I go outside of the ordinary-hopefully it will be helpful!

New Idaho Republican Caucus Turns Idaho into ‘Big Prize’

Idaho Republican Caucus events being held in each county across the state on Tuesday, March 6, mark a historical first for the State of Idaho. In years past, Idaho has held only a Primary election during a presidential race year.  But for 2012, Idaho will join ten other states holding Caucus elections on “Super Tuesday.”

This change gives the Gem State a much more viable voice regarding which current Republican Party candidate will face President Barack Obama this November. Each of Idaho’s 44 counties will simultaneously host caucus events the evening of March 6, 2012.

“This is an exciting year for Republicans and for Idaho,” Madison County Republican Party Chair Elaine King said. “The thing that is so exciting is that we didn’t know up front we’d have so many delegates. When we saw we had more than so many other states, we realized that Idaho could really be making a difference.”

In speaking of delegates, King is referring to the 32 representatives Idaho will have at the Republican National Convention to be held in August. Each state hosting a Caucus is allowed delegates based on state population. Barring that the state chooses not to hold their Caucus election prior to March 6, then that state has a collective voice that speaks in favor of the presidential candidate winning at least 50-percent of the Caucus vote. States that hold Caucus elections prior to March 6, like Iowa and Florida, forfeit 50-percent of their delegates as a result.

One notable stipulation of the new Idaho Caucus is that Idaho delegates will be bound to cast their vote at the National Republican Convention for the presidential candidate that earns at least 50-percent of the vote on March 6. In some states, including Iowa, delegates are not actually required to cast their national vote for the candidate who won in their home state. The candidate whom will be determined to be the Republican presidential contender at the National Convention in August will have to earn at least 1,044 delegate votes to become so.

“Major networks like CNN, FOX and MSNBC have been contacting Republican Party leaders in Boise,” King said. “They see the delegate numbers and realize that Idaho is a big prize.”

In order for their names to be considered in the Caucus election, presidential candidates must have paid a $2,000 fee by February 5. King said that all four candidates, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum, have already paid and thus will be in the running for votes March 6.

Idaho Caucus elections are open to all voters registered as Republicans, though they won’t find the typical polling booths and metal boxes. “It’ll be more of a meeting, an event,” King said.

Many counties will hold raffles and giveaways, as well as have food and music as part of the Caucus election. Around the state, voters can begin registering as Republicans as early as 4:00 p.m. Voting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Several different styles of voting will be used during Caucus elections, including paper ballots or voting tokens. Republicans attending can use the method of voting to select first, second and third round choices for presidential candidate. The votes will be cast and collected publically, as well as counted on the spot. Any candidate receiving less that 15-percent of votes will be removed from the running. If one candidate gets 50-percent of the vote in the initial count, no additional rounds will take place. If not, second round votes will then be counted for those voters that had chosen the loosing candidate. The process will continue until a candidate receives 50-percent of the vote.

Voters should note that presidential candidates will not appear on Primary Election ballots in May. Tuesday, March 6, will be the only day that Idaho citizens have the opportunity to cast their vote for who will ultimately represent the Republican Party in the 2012 presidential race.

Exchanging Valentines Crafty Mom Style :)

I recently participated in a Valentines Exchange at Happy Hour Projects and met another bloggy bestie in the process- Kadie from Seven Alive! She is such a sweet, talented lady! She has five kids and does some awesome crochet projects, among other things. And what a small world it is after all- she grew up not far from us in Idaho!

The boys were totally excited to help me open the package and enjoyed seeing all the goodies inside! The cute little heart masks were just for them- right up their alley :)

She also included these fun little extras- some sweet little bookmarks and some really pretty resin flower earrings. Isn't that little crocheted flower bookmark adorable! I love how dainty it is! You can get more info about how Kadie makes these HERE and how she makes the jumbo paperclip ones HERE.

The real star of the show is this amazing scarf- beautiful, huh?! It is so soft and "ruffles" or "curls" so beautifully! I love how I felt when I tried this on! I'm sure that this took a fair amount of time to complete and I know how frustrating it can get to complete anything with kids needing something at every turn- I am so grateful for such a thoughtful gift :) I had told her I loved purple and Stephen actually got me a purple jacket for Christmas that this will go really nicely with.

And I really don't share pics of myself, certainly not by myself, very often- for good reason!
But I wanted to show you how cute this looks on,
so here I am in all my everyday glory- no makeup and a braid!
Aren't the curly strands so fun?!
That white square is a drawing Cooper did of our  family that I have taped to my mirror... just so you know :)

Thank You again Kadie and Adrianne for a fabulous gift and a fun exchange! While I love the goodies, I'm even happier to have found someone new to stay in close touch with :)

And for a parting laugh,
here's a few outtakes from my Adventures-in-Self-Portraiture!
Ya know, because you really wanted to see
my toilet and dirty mirror and
particularly weird mouth thing I've got going on there... :P

You can see the fun apron and fabric bucket,
along with other small goodies,
that I sent to Kadie by clicking HERE :)

Happy Valentines Day! (late)

Awesome
Source via Here

I know it's over at this point, but I did want to post
a Happy Valentines Day to everyone!
This morning Cooper woke up and ran straight past his own Valentine surprises
to get the card we made for Daddy out of his room...
I was so touched at his sweet little heart!

And we tweaked Coop's Valentines just a bit-
he was so thrilled with them and I loved how they turned out!
Between his preschool party and getting a package from Gma and Gpa Huffaker
it was a fun morning!

Later we made brownies, cut them in heart shapes and
took them to a few friends "ding dong ditching"!
Cooper and Ryder both were so stinkin' cute
running back to the car after they rang the doorbell!

Funny story: I thought I knew where a certain friend that Cooper wanted to take them to lived.
But when the door got opened just after he got back to the car, a woman and little boy I didn't recognize looked out! I clearly had the wrong house! Oh well- some random family got some yummy brownies!

And that handsome guy? He is still my Valentine and always will be! He makes our life great!
I love you, Stephen!
PS... Cooper says you "look a little funny" without your goatee in this picture! :)

Hope it was a great Valentines Day for everyone!
